School counseling is changing along with the rest of K-12 education now that the focus is on the Common Core and college and career readiness. Remaining in the domain areas of academic, social/emotional (no longer personal/social), and career, ASCA is replacing the National Model first introduced in 2003 and the National Standards from 1997.
After a review of best practices and current research, “ASCA introduced the new ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College and Career Readiness for Every Student” at the 2014 National Conference. The 2014-15 school year has been designated as the transition year between the National Model and the 35 ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors’ standards.
ASCA has a growing database at schoolcounselor.org with grade-level competencies that support the new standards.
