Mindfulness

School counselors are well aware that life in our society has many stressors and that unmitigated stress can lead to all kinds of problems.  School counselors do their best to help children and teenagers as  well as themselves deal with stress.

Coming to attention in recent years is the practice of mindfulness.  Wikipedia defines mindfulness as “the intentional, accepting and non-judgmental focus of one’s attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment” by using meditation practices.

Along with increased awareness comes more options to study and apply mindfulness practices. Orange County Department of Education has been involved in The Resilient Mindful Learner Project that was launched during the 2013-2014 school year.  Through the project, teachers were taught mindfulness techniques both for themselves and to share with their classes.
